Tuning
Keep your piano happy by having it tuned at least once a year or, even better, every six months in order to keep the piano’s pitch in the neighbourhood of concertpitch A4=440 Hz. In that case it only needs a “one pass” tuning, that will not only save you money, but is also better for your piano’s condition.
If you would postpone tuning, your piano is very likely to go flat, once it is more than 30 cents flat (A4=432 instead of 440), it needs a pitch raise first before it can be fine-tuned. Needless to say, that will take more time and effort and will cost more.

Toning / Voicing
It can happen that over the years your piano’s tone will change, the felt of the hammers that hit the strings can have some wear and tear, the round shape can be flattened or the indent of the strings can get too deep. The sound can become too agressive, harsh or tinny.
In that case the hammerheads will need some attention.
By losening up the felt with needles or reshaping the hammers with sandpaper or using steam-ironing (who still does that? Well I do), the tone of your piano can be significantly improved.
All pianos are toned/voiced in the factory, but sometimes a brand new piano can still sound a little too bright (depending on the room, space-size and floor, wood/carpet/tiles) and can benefit from toning to get a nice, more mellow sounding voice.
